Description

Fairhaven Summer Repertory Theatre presents Just us - a time for humility and humanity

.

This summer Bellingham Theatreworks will produce three award winning and thought-provoking plays inspired by the social issues of race and discrimination that have entangled our country for generations. Each of these productions will be performed in the round in the intimate Firehouse Arts and Events Center. Audience members will be sitting with the actors while they explore a comic satire, a classic tale, and an imagined fantasy all wrapped around finding our way for humility and humanity. Our company combines many members of the community: students and educators, parents and children, as well as guest artists from far beyond Bellingham Bay, all working together to bring these three plays to life.

.

THE THANKSGIVING PLAY by Larissa FastHorse This comic satire is currently running in New York, celebrating the first time a Native American woman’s play has been produced on Broadway. The story revolves around four woke white individuals who attempt to create a politically correct First Thanksgiving play for Native American Heritage Month to be performed in schools. “it is the hilarious envelope in which she (FastHorse) delivers a brutal satire about mythmaking..” Jesse Green – New York Times

.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Christopher Sergel. Adapted from the novel by Harper Lee This is the stage adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Harper Lee. The story revolves around a small Alabama town lawyer Atticus Finch as he defends Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of rape that sends violent waves through the community in the 1930’s. Timeless and lingering, this hard-hitting work explores prejudice, compassion and the courage to do what is right. “Onstage, a classic about Racism and Tolerance.” Aileen Jacobson – New York Times

.

THE MOUNTAINTOP by Katori Hall Katori Hall was the first black woman in history to win the Olivier Award for Best New Play for this fictional depiction of Martin Luther King Jr’s last night on earth in Room 306 of the Lorriane Hotel on the eve of his assassination in 1968. “The Mountaintop is a bold shape shifter of a play.” Arifa Akbar – The Guardian
